Cultural highlights include numerous chapels and churches, known as Eremitas, as well as the historic Villa Gadea, which houses both the mayor’s office and a cultural center for music and foundations.
Altea’s history stretches back to the Iberians and Romans. Following the Moorish period, King James I of Aragon reconquered the town in 1244, and it received city rights in 1279. Don’t miss the Church of La Mare de Déu del Consol with its iconic blue domes, or the permanent exhibition of German painter and graphic artist Eberhard Schlotter at Costera dels Matxos 2.
